Usually an EEG of an awake brain shows lots of random, scribbly activity, reflecting activation and electrical activity in a number of separate locations and circuits. But occasionally synchronized, slow waves of activity, resembling what occurs during night time, deep nonREM sleep emerge from a brain that appears to be awake and alert. This is local sleep, and is associated with glitches in attention, memory and thinking, and is more common among those who are sleep deprived, or have narcolepsy, ADHD or dementia. Fortunately, a number of approaches, including electrical stimulation of the scalp, acoustic entraining, and medications, can boost night time slow wave sleep, and reduce daytime local sleep and improve cognitive performance.
