Main Chapters:

Impulsivity is one of the central symptoms of ADHD - yet only 3 of 9 symptoms of the official DSM impulsive/hyperactive criteria for ADHD address impulsivity. Impulsivity can entail acting before thinking, ignoring or not attending to relevant information, trouble restraining initial reactions, and poor planning for the future. Recent evidence has shown strong genetic contributions to impulsivity, but more importantly, that impulsivity is a collection of related and overlapping traits, with both common and unique and distinct genetic contributions to each of these traits.
