Thyroid hormone is the third most widely prescribed medication in the US. Aspects of hyperthyroidism, including hyperactivity, anxiety, and sleep disruption, can mimic ADHD. Distinguishing ADHD from hyperthyroidism includes looking for physical signs of too much thyroid, determining changes in symptoms over time, and obtaining blood levels of thyroid hormones. Thyroid levels that are too high or low during pregnancy increase the likelihood of the child developing ADHD, but increasing evidence suggests that many people taking replacement doses of thyroid hormone are taking too much.
