as posted by the channelWhat if everything you know about depression is wrong?
I’m a psychiatrist with almost a decade of experience, and I’ve seen how misunderstood the cause of depression really is.
Many people think depression is a well-defined medical condition caused by a chemical imbalance or faulty brain wiring. But the truth? There’s barely any support for that.
Currently, there is no evidence supporting the idea that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance.
There’s also no strong link to single genes or select groups of genes.
And there’s no solid evidence that it’s due to abnormal brain wiring.
What we do know is that depression is closely associated with:
1) Childhood maltreatment
2) Loneliness
3) Life stressors
So, while many think depression is all about brain chemistry or genes, for most people, it’s about life circumstances. For a deeper dive, check out our full video on depression coming out this month—link in the bio!
