Are GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound causing depression and anxiety?

As a board certified psychiatrist and former FDA medical officer, I have been closely tracking reports of sudden mood changes after people start GLP-1 medications. These include worsening anxiety, emotional blunting, depression, and in some cases suicidal thoughts, often within weeks of starting the drug.

Some individuals had no prior psychiatric history. Many report improvement after discontinuing the medication.

The FDA recently stated there is no increased risk of suicidal thoughts with GLP-1 receptor agonists after reviewing clinical trials. In this video, I explain why large trials may fail to detect psychiatric side effects, how weight loss itself can temporarily improve mood and potentially mask drug induced depression, and why individual case reports matter.

If you are taking Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound and notice depression, anxiety, or personality changes, this is important information.

GLP-1 side effects are not just physical. We need honest conversations about the potential mental health risks.
