As the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for the infectious respiratory illness COVID-19, continues to turn up in more places, health experts say it's wise to take precautions to help stem the spread of the disease.

Symptoms of COVID-19 can include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. Most people who are infected may develop only mild symptoms. However, some - usually those with underlying medical conditions - can develop more severe complications, including pneumonia.

If you feel ill, or exhibit symptoms of infection, self-isolation is recommended. Separating sick people from healthy people is key to preventing new infections.

Other tips include: • Cover your mouth when you cough. • Wash your hands frequently and refrain from touching your face. • Avoid nonessential travel and stay away from large crowds.

“It’s very critical that we slow down the epidemic by practicing these measures,” says Malia Jones, a social epidemiologist with the University of Wisconsin Applied Population Laboratory.
