The FBI and the Federal Trade Commission are increasing efforts to crack down on scams related to the coronavirus outbreak. According to a cybersecurity company report, the rise in this kind of illegal conduct has come in the form of email phishing campaigns, fraudulent goods, and disinformation campaigns.

“There’s a special place in hell for people like this,” says Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. He advises the public to be aware and look for “red flags” like unsolicited emails, phone calls, or in-person visits from people claiming to be from a government agency, local law enforcement, or a utility company. He says if you have any doubt, call your local law enforcement agency and ask them to help you verify the person’s identity.

“Most importantly,” says the sheriff, “Never, ever let them inside your home.”
