Cassie was living with her mother until last year, and Dave took her in when she needed a place to stay. “It was a total disaster,” Dave says. “I came home from work several times, and there’d be guys in my spare bedroom. They’d all be shooting up, smoking crack. She would meet up with these guys, and she would call them dates. She was selling herself so she could supply her habit. It made me feel terrible.”

Dave, who admits that he used drugs in the 70s and early 80s, claims that Cassie’s drug use triggered him. “I used cocaine with her twice when she lived with me. I made a horrible mistake,” Dave acknowledges. But he also says that he believes he kept her alive. “Had she not lived with me, she would have died on the street.”
