“There were a couple of key defections that were very instrumental in helping the CIA understand who and how to work in Venezuela, because they were having some difficulties previously,” Murphy said, explaining how those defections enabled a “local support network” to operate on the ground and “do things on the ground that they weren’t able to do themselves.”
“Most of the people in the CIA look like me and you, Jeremy,” Murphy added—highlighting why the mission’s success depended on the support agent network, which emplaced technical equipment on the ground—jammers, beacons for airstrikes, etc.
“All of this was pre-arranged,” he told Drop Site.
