as posted by the channelREPORT | Jan 28: Texas state police fired chemical irritants at protestors outside the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, where 5-year old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias are currently being held. Liam and his father, who both have active asylum cases, were arrested by ICE after coming home from preschool in the Minneapolis suburb of Columbia Heights on Jan. 20, 2026. A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deporting Liam and his father.
On Saturday, Eric Lee, a Michigan-based immigration attorney was at the facility trying to visit one of the families he represents. In an interview with MPR News he stated that “guards rushed in” and told people to get out. As he walked back to his car, he heard “what sounded like hundreds and hundreds of children shouting, screaming. And I realized they were saying, ‘let us out, let us out.’” Lee recorded audio of their screams, and aerial footage taken shows detainees demonstrating and waving signs.
The Dilley immigrant detention facility is run by CoreCivic, a private prison company. Lee stated that conditions inside the facility “are absolutely abysmal.”
He continued, “They mix baby formula with water that is putrid. The food has bugs in it. The guards are often verbally abusive. One of my clients had appendicitis, collapsed in the hallway, was vomiting from pain, and the officials told him, take a Tylenol and come back in three days.”
According to Lee, the detainees mobilized after receiving news about the recent general strike in Minneapolis “and because of the attention that’s been brought on this facility.”
Two people were arrested at the protest.
