These factories were critical for producing life-saving medicines such as active pharmaceutical ingredients for cancer treatments, antibiotics, and cardiovascular drugs.

While today’s attack targeted The Pasteur Institute, which Iran scholar Vali Nasr described as an “icon of Iran’s health care system,” the institute was established over a century ago and is vital for Iran’s vaccination efforts and research.

Strikes destroying Iranian pharmaceutical facilities have cut off life-saving treatment for hundreds of thousands of patients with severe and chronic illnesses, including for cancer patients, with independent experts warning the attacks constitute war crimes under international law, according to Deutsche Welle Persian.
