What happens when our confidence is rooted in ourselves instead of Christ in us? In Episode 13 of "Essentials in Leadership," Duane Sheriff teaches that believers are not called to build high self-esteem, but high Christ-esteem. True confidence is not found in pride, self-promotion, or positive thinking apart from God—it is found in discovering who we are in Christ and learning to live from our new identity in Him.
Using Galatians 2, 2 Corinthians 5, and Colossians 3, Duane explains that the "old self" in Adam was crucified with Christ and that every born-again believer has become a new creation. Many insecurities, jealousies, fears, and feelings of inferiority are rooted in identifying with the flesh rather than with the new man in Christ. There is a difference between arrogance and godly confidence. Arrogance trusts in self, while true confidence trusts in Christ in us, the hope of glory.
