The case of Sonya Massey involves a tragic and #controversialnews #police shooting that has public attention and led to widespread marches for #Justiceforsonya . On July 6, 2024, Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman from Springfield, Illinois, called 911 to report a prowler near her home. Two Sangamon County sheriff's deputies, including Deputy Sean Grayson, responded to the call. During the encounter, Massey was shot multiple times by Deputy Grayson, resulting in her death. The incident was captured on body camera footage, which showed that Grayson shot Massey while she was holding a pot of hot water. Massey had reportedly said, "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus," to which Grayson responded with a threat before opening fire. The footage revealed that Grayson did not activate his body camera until after the shooting, but the incident was recorded by the other deputy's camera​
