ROBERT BROOKS UPDATE | Inmate Robert Brooks died on December 10, 2024, after a brutal, on-camera beating by Marcy Correctional Facility officers. Since our January 2025 coverage, the case has continued.
- Christopher Walrath became the first of the six murder defendants to flip, pleading guilty to 1st-degree manslaughter—a deal that carries 15 years and locks in his testimony against fellow guards
- Nicholas Gentile admitted he wiped up Brooks’ blood and filed no report; he took a misdemeanor tampering plea and must resign or face jail
- Michael Mashaw—charged with manslaughter for pummeling Brooks moments after intake—now has an October 6, 2025, trial date in Oneida County Court
Five guards still face 2nd-degree murder, three face manslaughter, and another is slated for evidence-tampering; the consolidated October jury trial will test New York’s new body-cam rules for prisons.
Governor Kathy Hochul fired 13 staffers, the FBI and NY Attorney General’s OSI opened parallel probes, and lawmakers are pushing oversight reforms.
