The airport had been shut down by two days of mass pro-democracy protests, which at times turned violent. In response, some protesters have apologized with signs and tweets. But they're also vowing to carry on with their campaign for democracy - and for greater independence from Beijing. China's Hong Kong affairs office has condemned yesterday's violence, calling it 'terrorist-like.' Meanwhile, footage released by the state-run Global Times newspaper shows Chinese police vehicles gathering in large number in the city of Shenzhen, just over mainland China's border with Hong Kong. The vehicles belong to the Chinese People's Armed Police Force, which is tasked with riot control and anti-terrorism operations. It takes its orders from Beijing. The presence of military vehicles so close to Hong Kong is raising questions about Beijing's intentions.
