The protesters barricaded Hong Kong's Polytechnic University (PolyU) as part of a week-long campaign aimed at disrupting traffic and hitting the local economy. Riot police fired tear gas in a bid to clear the demonstrators, who threw petrol bombs and started fires on the street.
The Chinese military deployed troops in the city for the first time since the protests began to clear street barricades.
