Li Wenliang contracted the virus while working at a hospital in the city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak. Conflicting reports on Li's condition began circulating online on Thursday. Two announcements about Li's death by Chinese state media were later deleted, causing confusion and anger. As the coronavirus spreads, the race is on to find a cure or a vaccine for the disease. The World Health Organization is convening an international research conference next week to identify promising drug and vaccine projects to be fast-tracked for development. One company in Germany is hoping that its research receives the WHO's backing.
