The struggle between the central government and Tigray began after Addis Ababa claimed the regional forces had attacked national military bases. Tigrayans controlled Ethiopia's central government for 30 years. But their power has waned under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who came to power in 2018. Thousands of civilians have fled the fighting many with harrowing stories. A refugees camp for quickly filled up in neighboring Sudan.
