But the regime of Bashar al-Assad responded with a brutal crackdown, triggering a war that has cost thousands of lives. Today, we are shining a light on one of the most prominent figures of Syria's pro-democracy movement — human rights activist Razan Zaitouneh. She was kidnapped by armed men in 2013 and her fate remains unresolved. DW's investigative unit has been retracing her steps.
