The European Union also plans to deliver more than 100 million doses of vaccines to the continent this year. Many African nations are struggling to secure vaccines on the global market – and South Africa is entering a third wave of infections. DW correspondent Adrian Kriesch reports from Durban.
Many South Africans are not happy about the slow rollout of the vaccination program. But the government says they simply are not able to get their deliveries earlier due to global demand - and also because many industrial countries secured huge vaccine supplies for themselves. Although South Africa ordered vaccines for 75 percent of the population - only a fraction of that has arrived so far.
This is why French President Emmanuel Macron and German Health Minister Jens Sphan are visiting South Africa, to support technology transfer and the establishment of regional manufacturing centers. France committed up to 500 Million Euros, Germany will invest up to 50 million.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has been a leading voice speaking out against lack of vaccine access for poor countries – and demanding an intellectual property waiver for Covid-19 vaccines.
So far, not a single vaccine is produced in South Africa from scratch. Only one Covid-19 vaccine is partly manufactured here – filled in vials and distributed. Experts say it will take a long time to create the necessary capacity. Time that South Africa doesn’t have. Infection rates have been increasing in the past few days – the country is going into the third wave. And people who are under the age of 60 are still not sure when they will be able to get inoculated.
