At the beginning of the year the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed it had defeated the virus. Shazia Ilmi, national spokesperson from Modi’s ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, BJP, joined Tim Sebastian from New Delhi to address the government’s handling of the pandemic as well as its clampdown on journalists and human rights activists.
