In his meeting with US President Joe Biden, Scholz is keen to present a common front on the Ukraine crisis and keep relations smooth – Germany has just taken over the G7 presidency. In the runup to the meeting, Scholz said that Germany is the strongest economic supporter of Ukraine.
The leaders will discuss sanctions against Russia if it invades Ukraine, for example possible penalties on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline - which is to deliver Russian gas to Germany - bypassing countries like Poland or Ukraine. The two leaders will also talk about bilateral relations and ways of fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
