Experts say that Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant — Europe's biggest — is "extremely vulnerable" to meltdown after the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said all safety measures had been "violated" by occupying Russian forces.

If the plant loses grid power due to a potential uptick of fighting in the area, backup generators and batteries are still insufficient to cool, not only the six reactors, but large pools of highly radioactive spent fuel, said Shaun Burnie, nuclear specialist with Greenpeace East Asia.

These fears were heightened when Ukraine's state nuclear agency, Energoatom, said parts of the Zaporizhzhia facility were "seriously damaged" after a station containing oxygen and nitrogen and an "auxiliary building" were struck by shelling over the weekend.

On Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres demanded that international inspectors be given access to the Zaporizhzhia plant after Ukraine and Russia traded accusations over the shelling.
