Chinese workers have been targetted most, with young people the greatest attraction for the abusers. The system of trafficking is so organized that who neighborhoods are set up for just this purpose. But these areas are also completely fenced, meaning escape is impossible. And even trying to escape can incur punishment by death.

Online "boiler room" rackets have long had a presence in this part of the world, but as more details emerge, local law enforcement agencies are waking up to this cross-border phenomenon. It'll take international cooperation to save these people. The UN Human Rights envoy recently visited Cambodia, where hundreds of Taiwanese are said to be trapped.

Having been sold by agents for sums of around 20,000 USD, victims' passports are conviscated whereupon they begin their working days, which means a 15 hour slog where they must work on illegal scams, such as using cryptocurrency or cat-fishing people out of money.

The operations, which are thought to be connected in most continents and which have lasted for years at this point, have stolen tens of billions of dollars. It is suspected that this is ultimately connected to the beld and road initiative.
