How far will Russia go in Moldova? | Conflict Zone Special

Just beyond Russia’s war in Ukraine, a small democratic government, perhaps Europe’s most fragile, appears in the Kremlin’s crosshairs. Moldova’s pro-European government, led by President Maia Sandu, says it has been the target of a Russian-backed plot. The EU has granted the former Soviet republic ‘candidate status,’ but not much more. Meanwhile, Moldova, one of Europe’s poorest countries, is housing hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees. Ukraine’s fight is everyone’s fight, the president Maia Sandu tells DW’s Tim Sebastian. But fugitive opposition politician and oligarch Ilan Shor, who was sentenced to 15 years in Moldova and leads the Russia-friendly SOR party from Israel, tells DW he won’t comment on Russia's war crimes in Ukraine. Can the government withstand security threats and economic pressures to keep the country on a democratic path?
