Update: Based on multiple reports at the time about the targeting of Chinese dissidents in exile using new, unconventional methods, DW News Asia ran this segment, including a video report with content provided by the Associated Press, about one Chinese family's experience being harassed in Thailand. This was followed by an interview with the investigative journalist at Axios who’d first broken the story.

Our program never interviewed Wang Jingyu, the man whose testimony is being called into question by NPR's report. The intimidation of the Gao family in Thailand remains true, although this case of transnational repression can no longer be reliably attributed to the Chinese state.

DW provides this update following AP’s retraction of its story, and the retraction and/or reassessment by other media outlets. We would like to also take this opportunity to link to NPR’s investigation:

China has started to target human rights activists who live abroad. They do this by making false bomb threats against hotels and embassies, giving the name of the dissident as the perpetrator. So what happens next is the police - whether in Europe or the Middle East or Asia - arrests the dissident. In some cases, the situation is cleared up quickly and they are let go, but in others - it becomes consequential.
