9:04Now PlayingEuropean Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, has arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa, along with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
They have been visiting port facilities and a migrant reception center. Italy has asked Brussels for help in dealing with thousands of sudden migrant arrivals. Residents have expressed frustration with plans to put up a tent city, to house the migrants while they await transfer to other parts of Italy. Most are sleeping out in the open. Over 8,000 people have arrived on the island this week and boats are still landing.
President von der Leyen said the EU is aware of its responsibility to the people of Lampedusa and to the migrants.
