19:51Now PlayingThe EU’s former trade commissioner Phil Hogan told DW that Europe is trading more with China than ever before, and dismissed Beijing’s accusations that Brussels is using a probe into Chinese subsidies as an excuse for protection.
Hogan told DW Europe should continue diversifying supply chains by striking deals with Australia and South America’s Mercosur bloc but noted that in the past, Europe was pressured by the United States to “decouple” from China. Hogan thinks a controversial EU-China investment agreement struck in 2020 could be the “basis of a negotiation going forward,” though he acknowledged there’s little chance of the deal being revived in the short term due to ongoing political disputes.
