16:56Now PlayingIsrael and the Palestinian militant group Hamas appear to be on the verge of an agreement to release some of the hostages held in Gaza. According to a statement cited by several news agencies, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said negotiators were 'close to reaching a deal.' The agreement would see a swap of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails in exchange for Hamas setting free a significant number of the hostages they abducted from Israel on October 7th. A temporary truce of several days is reportedly part of the deal, which would additionally allow the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.
As negotiations move forward, several families of Israeli hostages have voiced concern that the country's war cabinet is not making a serious effort to bring their loved ones home. Meeting with Israeli lawmakers, the relatives of some of the hostages urged them not to pursue a bill that would allow the death penalty for captured Palestinian militants — believing that even talking about it could endanger the lives of their family members.
