At a joint press conference, Chancellor Scholz said both countries are pushing for the trade deal to become a reality.
High-level meetings between the governments were suspended while right-wing populist Jair Bolsonaro was in office. The resumption of diplomatic ties after an eight-year break raise hopes that progress on projects like the planned free trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur -- South America's major trading bloc - can now move forward.
DW's Chief Political Editor Michaela Küfner was at the German chancellory for the meeting between Lula and Scholz. We asked her how high the chances are, that the EU and the Mercosur group will sign a free trade agreement in the next few days.
