The alliance was founded after the Second World War to counter the perceived threat posed by the Soviet Union, and as it looks ahead to future challenges, its members are demanding Germany play a bigger role. At a ceremony in Brussels, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg stressed the value of unity between the members of the alliance.
