Israel fires officers for death of aid workers and opens two border crossings for Gaza aid | DW News

Israel says it has fired two senior officers and reprimanded three others for Monday's airstrikes in Gaza that killed seven aid workers.

An inquiry carried out by Israel's military found that its forces mistakenly believed the humanitarian convoy had been taken over by Hamas militants - and that drone operators mistook a humanitarian worker holding a bag for a gunman. The aid group is calling for an independent inquiry, stating that Israel's military can't credibly investigate its own failure.

And the EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell says a decision by Israel to open up more corridors for aid into Gaza won't be enough to stop starvation in the territory. Israel's move came after pressure from the US on Thursday. The opening of the Erez Crossing into the Palestinian territory's north was among several steps approved by Israel's Cabinet to let in more humanitarian assistance. The port in Ashdod will also be reopened to process aid shipments bound for Gaza and more deliveries will pass through Kerem Shalom in the south.
