11:07Now PlayingThe German Bundestag has passed a bill that would allow people to change their gender and first name by notifying the registry office - without a medical certificate, expert opinion or court order.
According to the bill, changes must be registered three months in advance, and young people over the age of 14 should be able to fill out the declaration themselves.
Until now, transgender and intersex people have had to undergo an assessment with intimate questions, which is often perceived as degrading by those affected. The current Transsexuals Act of 1980 is to be repealed. Until now, transsexuals have had to go through a lengthy and costly process involving expert testimony and a court order to change their gender marker, including their first name.
