No one knows how many soldiers have been killed in Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. A few weeks ago, President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Ukrainian military death toll was 31,000, but independent experts say the real number is probably much higher. Russia doesn’t release numbers. In the chaos of advance or retreat, the bodies of soldiers from both sides are often left behind. DW correspondent Jan-Philipp Scholz accompanied volunteers trying to find and identify them.
