The investment boom reverses a decades-long trend, in which the number of nuclear warheads had been falling. But with geopolitical alliances shifting and conflicts on the rise, nuclear powers are once again looking to up their stockpiles. China is particular is building up its nuclear arsenal at a rapid rate, fueling American fears of a potential nuclear alliance with Russia and North Korea and casting doubts over US abilities to protect its allies in the event of a nuclear conflict.
