16:49Now PlayingThousands of Ukraine's war dead remain unidentified, and morgues across the country are reportedly overwhelmed with unidentified bodies, adding to the anguish of families who often have no certainty about the fate of their loved ones. In most cases, only DNA analysis can provide the necessary answers.
The Dnipro Regional Bureau of Forensic Medicine is one of Ukraine's DNA laboratories. Every day, truckloads of bodies arrive from the Dnipro, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions. The lab's doctors, forensic experts, and pathologists work to identify the bodies, a process that can sometimes take months, depending on how badly damaged the bodies are. The lab also has offices where families come to search for their loved ones, try to identify the dead through objects and photographs and provide genetic samples if needed. The work is grim and challenging, but hugely important in bringing dignity and closure to thousands of families.
