Syria's rebels have named Mohammed al-Bashir as the country's new interim prime minister. He announced that he will head up a transitional government until March 1st, 2025.

Bashir had already served as the leader of a rebel-held area in northwestern Syria before the lightning offensive that saw Assad toppled after 24 years in power.

The 41-year-old is a trained engineer who also has a degree in Sharia law from the university in Idlib, a longtime rebel stronghold.

Before becoming prime minister of what the rebels, lead by Islamist group Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), dubbed the "Salvation Government" in January 2024, he worked for the group's ministry responsible for development and humanitarian aid.

Journalist Ossama Muhammad joined us from Qamishli, in northeastern Syria, to discuss Bashir's appointment and the latest developments in Syria.

We also spoke to Professor Fawaz Gerges from the London School of Economics about Syria's different rebel groups and the moderate tone HTS has been striking.
