Some fear that its most radical force, the Islamic State terrorist group, could use the current fragility in Syria to rebuild its capabilities. Turkey has played a significant and multi-faceted role in recent events in Syria, having backed groups like the Syrian National Army, which also opposed the Assad regime. Ankara has worked hard to prevent the establishment of a Kurdish-controlled autonomous regioon near its border.
