Nearly a million Syrian nationals live in Germany, DW has been speaking to Syrians living in Berlin about their reaction to Assad's downfall.
Turkey is home to even more Syrians who fled the Assad regime, with some three million finding refuge there. Thousands are now heading to the Turkish-Syrian border in order to return to Syria.
The newly installed Syrian interim prime minister Mohammed al-Bashir has called on refugees to return home and help rebuild their war-torn homeland.
The United Nation's Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria Adam Abdelmoula joined us from Damascus to discuss whether Syria is actually ready to receive refugees.
