How disaster prepared are countries in case of a tsunami? | DW News

Countries in Southeast Asia are marking 20 years since a massive tsunami swept ashore, killing more than 220,000 people. In 2004 a powerful earthquake struck off Indonesia's western coast, unleashing the tsunami that hit more than a dozen countries. People in Indonesia's Aceh province have been holding memorial services to pay tribute to the victims. People there have also been offering prayers at mass graves to pay tribute to the victims.

Countries in Southeast Asia are marking 20 years since a massive tsunami swept ashore, killing more than 220,000 people. The deadly waves were triggered by a 9.1 earthquake that struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on December 26, 2004. The tsunami rippled across the Indian Ocean killing thousands in Malaysia, Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka. Most of the victims were killed in Indonesia.

Since then, the Indonesia has stepped up its disaster preparedness but some question whether it’s enough. Scientists say the next big quake is only a matter of time.
