4:53Now PlayingRussian forces are currently in control of almost a fifth of Ukraine’s territory. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, millions of Ukrainians have fled the fighting by traveling east across the border into Russia. But making the journey from there back into free Ukrainian territory is more difficult.
Since last August, the only option is to go through Belarus, a Russian ally. There is only one remaining open border crossing between Belarus and Ukraine in Domanove. This route only works for Russian passport holders.
DW correspondent Sonia Phalnikar met with people who have managed to flee Russian-occupied territory. Some don’t want to show their faces on camera because they still have family in Russian-controlled areas.
