With results from Sunday's national election now official, the conservative Friedrich Merz is poised to become the next chancellor. Merz's centre-right CDU/CSU bloc secured the most votes by a clear margin, although smaller than he wanted at under 30%. The Conservatives are likely to form a coalition with the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats, who came third. The far-right AFD took second place, but Merz refuses to work with them.
