7:16Now PlayingThe Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitoring group based in the UK, has reported a death toll of over 1,000 people near the coastal town of Latakia in northwest Syria. According to the war monitor, Syria's interim government security forces killed 745 civilians at close shooting range in the Alawite coastal town. In addition, 148 militants loyal to Assad as well as 125 members of the interim government's forces were also killed. The death toll has not yet been independently verified.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Syria, under its current leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa, to hold the "perpetrators" of the killings to account, saying that "radical Islamic terrorists" were responsible for the violence.
