Rasool has been given 72 hours to leave the country. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called Rasool a "race-baiting politician" who hates America and US President Trump. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called the expulsion “regrettable” and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting ties with the US. Tensions with the US have been high, with Trump recently freezing aid to South Africa.
