He has been considered an important partner: a fellow populist at the heart of Europe, within NATO. Orban wants to show the world he still is important to President Trump. But it appears Trump doesn't need Orban within the EU - because he’s ignoring Europe. At the first pre-peace-talks meeting in Saudi Arabia in February, the US and Russia not only excluded Ukraine, they also didn’t invite the Europeans. And if Trump really does want a friend in Europe, these days there are other candidates to choose from. Orban may have been the trailblazer for illiberalism and radical populist policies in modern-day Europe. But he’s no longer the only one. And the others are in more important EU countries: Italy, and the biggest of all: Germany. DW's Senior International Correspondent Fanny Facsar travels to Washington D.C., Brussels and Budapest to explore the changing dynamics of the Trump-Orbán relationship in light of shifting geopolitical strategies.
