6:39Now PlayingWe apologise for the use of a number of vox pops from people on the streets of Taiwan in this recent report about Chinese military exercises in the region. The material was filmed by CGTN/CCTV and expressed a very one-sided view of the Taiwanese government. The footage was delivered to us by the news agency AP, but was clearly marked as CGTN/CCTV.
While we have no blanket ban on using CCTV material, it is our clear policy that we should either clearly mark CCTV material, or not use it at all, when it appears that it was filmed for propaganda purposes. In this instance, that was clearly the case and the material should not have been used. We have since removed the section of soundbites from the report.
We apologise for the false impression that the original report may have given. We will remind everyone in our newsroom of our policy regarding CCTV footage, so incidents like this will be avoided in future.

The European Union has accused China of increasing cross-strait tensions by holding military drills around Taiwan. It called on all parties to exercise restraint. Taiwan has deployed its own navy in response to the drills - which some are calling a dress rehearsal for an invasion. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to take it over.
