Here in Europe, Germany's DAX plunged 10% on opening, before finishing the day more than 4% in the red. And there were similar losses in France and the UK.
Against the backdrop of crashing stock markets and economic uncertainty, EU trade ministers gathered in Luxembourg to discuss their response to Washington's new trade regime. Starting on Wednesday, the EU will face tariffs of 20% on almost all exports to the United States.
Donald Trump's levies are causing anxiety and anger in European capitals. The transatlantic trade relationship is the biggest in the world, worth 1.5 trillion euros. European officials say they would rather talk than fight the US on tariffs, but if push comes to shove all options are on the table.
