After leaving Germany in the aftermath of World War Two, she moved back to her native Berlin and spent her final years educating young people about the Holocaust. She warned against modern-day right-wing populism and antisemitism. But she also cautioned her audiences against clinging to grievances that divide people, offering what German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called "the gift of reconciliation - despite everything that the Germans did to her as a young woman".
