Reports indicate the church's priest was among those injured and officials with the Catholic Church say the Holy Family Church in Gaza City sustained damage. The Church was sheltering displaced Christians and Muslims, including several children with disabilities. Witnesses suggest the building may have been struck by an Israeli tank. In a statement the Israeli military said it "never targets religious sites."
Italy’s Prime Minister Georgia Meloni issued a stark condemnation of the deadly attack on the Catholic Church in Gaza. An ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister Meloni’s rebuke of Israel’s attack was unusually forceful given Italy’s refusal to support any cut in trade or diplomatic ties with Israel over its military actions and restriction of humanitarian aid in Gaza.
