Survivors of the bombing were among those taking part in the ceremony. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba laid flowers at a monument to pay tribute to the victims. A minute's silence was held at a quarter past 8 - to remember the moment in 1945 when an American plane dropped an atomic bomb on the city, instantly killing tens of thousands of people.
More nations now possess nuclear weapons than ever before. And arsenals are being modernized. Which raises the question: has the world truly learned the lessons of Hiroshima?
